One Day in Ribera del Duero

These are suggested itineraries. Vinophoria can customize any tour to accommodate your interests.

Perfect for an introduction to the wines and history of Ribera del Duero.

Departure from Madrid at 9:00 a.m.

You’ll set off bright and early from Madrid to discover first-hand why Ribera del Duero is one of Spain’s hottest wine regions.

First, you’ll visit two of Ribera del Duero’s most exemplary wineries. Tours will take in each phase of the wine making process and a discussion of the region’s native grape, Tinta del País. You´ll come away with a complete picture of what makes Ribera del Duero and it´s wonderful unique wines. We´ll visit a traditional, family-run winery, as well as a modern winery with state-of-the-art equipment and facilities. At each winery you´ll enjoy a private wine tasting after the tour.

After a full morning of wine appreciation, you’ll be ready to relax and enjoy a leisurely, gourment lunch. You´ll dine in one of the bodega’s stylish dining rooms, or in a charming regional restaurant, and savor a typical, Castilian meal accompanied by terrific wine.

Following lunch, you´ll take a short, scenic stroll and then it’s on to an afternoon of culture. You’ll visit some of the most important monuments in the region, and on the way, soak up Ribera del Duero’s magnificent landscape. You’ll tour the impressive Peñafiel Castle, a XIV century castle which looks like an enormous stone ship anchored on the Castilian plateau, and have a chance to peruse the modern wine museum located within the castle’s southern keep. Before departing for Madrid, you´ll wander through Peñafiel and stop for a coffee in the town´s unusual El Coso plaza.

Alternatively, you can visit the lovely monastery of Santa María de Valbuena. Situated near the bank of the Duero, this monastery was founded in the XII century and is one of the finest examples of Spanish Cistercian architecture.

On the way back to Madrid, you´ll already be looking forward to your next journey to Ribera del Duero!
